Roma by Night

My husband is from Rome; well actually 20km up the side of a volcano with a view of city and sea, but still Rome -and he has an indecipherable Roman accent to go with it.  He and my in-laws own a bed and breakfast in the centre of the city, now, and consequently we spend a lot of time in the city when we visit, checking people in, helping them find restaurants and places to go.. and on some very rare occasions, we do some sight-seeing as well.  My husband’s favourite is Roma by night.

Some last-minute pre-Christmas shopping.

Many of the neighbourhoods are lit up like this until Befana(after Christmas).  Wandering the streets at midnight couldn’t be more beautiful.

At the Pantheon.  This photo reminds me of Hannibal Lecter; go figure.  I guess I really enjoy the books and dapper men of advanced age, alone at night have that mysterious feel about them.  Meanwhile, a beautiful square… and fountain…

Some late-night window shopping as well.

Yes, even street performers hang around in the middle of the night.

In the background, you can see a market, brightly lit and full of people.  It is one of the Befana markets.  There is always Porchetta, giant donuts with Nutella, and stockings filled to give to kids on Befana.  And of course games and other naughty treats.  Also, exactly behind me is another bustling Befana market; only at Christmastime.

You cannot possible walk three blocks of Rome without seeing a church, cathedral, portrait of the Madonna or a chapel.  They are everywhere!  In fact, walking through Rome could never be boring; there is always something beautiful popping up around the corner and you find yourself walking for hours without even realising it.

So, there you have it.  Roma by night.  There are many obvious reasons to visit Rome, but many secret, lovelier reasons you’ll find once you get there.
